Life & Lens
The Minerva Project • September 12, 2025
Life & Lens is a paired reflection of the relationship between the natural world and the sciences we use to study and tend to it. One represents the essence of growth and life in biology, while the other represents the tools and frameworks we use to understand and cultivate it. This is an interdependent relationship, especially within the context of systems like healthcare.
However, lenses are never neutral. The frameworks medicine applies are tinted with the historical, social, and political biases that are ever present in our world. This has meant that science, and the way we’ve interacted with biology, has often been skewed and rigid in its application, sidelining the growth and unpredictability in natural life.

Life
We often think of science as particularly grounded and concrete. But, this can allow the complexities and nuances of life to ellipse us—something that can be crucial in healthcare. It is important to remember that both sides of the coin are vital to the relationship of science and life. The structures we apply allow life to be understood, and change to be created. The ever-changing quality of life is what makes these structures simply guiding frameworks and perspectives, creating a reciprocal relationship. It is only together that these ideas help us utilize our knowledge to help others through systems like medicine.
